Understanding Progressive Infantile Scoliosis
There are two types of Infantile Scoliosis
1) Idiopathic Scoliosis - which simply means that the cause is unknown.
There is no known reason for how babies and toddlers develop idiopathic scoliosis, but there are several theories out there. It is a rare condition that affects children before the age of 3 and is characterized by the presence of a abnormal lateral curvature of the spine.
This curvature causes the spinal column to bend to the left or the right, in the shape of an S or a C. Most cases resolve spontaneously, but some may progress to more severe deformity.
2) Congenital Scoliosis - When a child has congenital scoliosis, it is normally caused by a rib deformity or missing
and deformed vertebrae, that they are born with.
This is completely different from Idiopathic Scoliosis.
Progressive Infantile Scoliosis is a rare condition affecting 1 in 10,000 babies. If left untreated, the spine can crush the heart and lungs with fatal results.
Most Drs. want these babies in a "wait and watch" plan, while the parents watch their babies backs progressively get worse.
If the degree worsens then they want to put them in a brace (which please note - does NOT straighten them, only holds them - most of the time, sometimes it does not even do that! -) then if it continues to worsen and the brace does not hold, they recommend growth rods in their backs...until they are old enough to have a spinal fusion!
BUT, our children have HOPE!!
Proper treatment using the Mehta casting method can harness an infant's rapid growth and train the spine to grow straight. Research has shown this gentle treatment can be effective for a lifetime cure for this very serious condition.
